The average starting salary of a newly qualified engineers is in the region of £32,500; a figure which could double with experience and a managed learning programme. Whilst some relevant experience within a relevant industry such as plumbing is helpful, it is not a requirement of the course. Those with proven relevant previous experience may not need to complete step 1.

STEP 1: INTRO TO GAS
COURSE OVERVIEW
This will provide candidates with the basic practical skills and theoretical knowledge from which to build upon allowing them to then move forward with confidence.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
You will cover all the areas of study required including:
- Introduction to plumbing, gas and heating theory and principles
- Pipework installation and practical skills
- Tools explained and tool box talk and H&S intro (COSSH)
- Soldering techniques
- pipework: jointing, bending and pressure testing copper tube
- Valves, taps and cisterns (inc fitting, finding fault and repair)
- Plumbing in a rad system
STEP 2: GAS DIPLOMA
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN GAS DIPLOMA COURSE
This includes the provision of an agreed managed learning programme. This will be delivered through a mix of both practical and theorical training session in the onsite classrooms where lessons, demonstrations, written examinations and practical assessments will take place.
Printed training modules will be provided from which homework and home study would also be required. The cost of your Gas Diploma course also includes your examination fees, assessment and certification costs, printing and the use of tools required to undertake practical training and assessments.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
You will cover all the areas of study required including:
- Health and Safety including asbestos & legionella awareness, manual handling and fire safety precautions
- Gas legislation, Building Regulations and British Standards
- Industry unsafe situations procedures
- Tightness testing of domestic natural gas installations
- Measuring and interpretation of gas pressures and the calculation of heat inputs
- Gas appliance functions and the operation of gas safety controls
- Principles of flueing, chimneys and combustion
- Safe isolation of electrical installations
- Energy Efficiency for Domestic heating
- Managed Learning Programme (MLP) for Domestic Natural Gas
- Water Regulations (WRAS), Hot Water Systems & Safety (inc Unvented hot water systems)
- ACS refresher training and assessment for Core Domestic Gas Safety (CCN1) and Gas fired boilers and water heaters (CENWAT)
STEP 3 - PORTFOLIO
COURSE OVERVIEW
You cannot sit your final ACS assessments without a portfolio of evidence and this can only be gathered by working alongside a Gas Safe registered engineer. The Portfolio is an essential step in the process and needs to be completed prior to completing the any ACS Assessment and Examinations.
Often the most difficult part of becoming a gas engineer is obtaining practical, on the job working experience building a ‘portfolio of works’. G&E Training can assist you in finding a suitable placement where you will work under the supervision and guidance of a fully qualified gas engineer on ‘live’ jobs. A variety of jobs will need to be completed, photographic evidence obtained, and documentation completed in this manner.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A portfolio placement can be offered to those who have completed a gas foundation course elsewhere.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
Whilst working under the supervision and guidance of a fully qualified gas engineer on ‘live’ jobs you will need to complete a variety of jobs including:

- Ducted air heater installation
- Servicing and breakdowns of ducted air heaters

STEP 4: ACS Initial Training & Examinations
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
Your initial ACS examinations will be delivered on site. Prior to your examinations we will deliver to you a ‘course refresher’ to prepare you both theoretically and practically. Upon successful completion you will be eligible to apply to the Gas Safe Register.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE ACS INITIAL COURSE
Step 4 includes your examination fees, assessment and certification costs, printing and the use of tools required to undertake practical training and assessments. Upon successful completion of your training and examinations you will be certified in the following areas:
- CCN1 (Core Gas Safety); Core Domestic Gas Safety. The CCN1 qualification assesses the competency of gas operatives undertaking work with core domestic gas
- CENWAT (Boilers/Water Heaters Element); Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters. The CENWAT qualification assesses the candidate’s competency in installing, servicing and repairing central heating boilers and water heaters.
- CKR1 (Cookers, Ovens & Hobs Element); Domestic Cookers. The CKR1 qualification assesses the competency of gas operatives undertaking work with domestic cookers.
- HRT1 (Fires & Space Heaters Element); The HTR1 qualification assesses the competency of gas operatives undertaking work with heaters and fires.
Please note our course fees do not include the cost of Gas Safe Registration; this would be payable to Gas Safe for admission onto the Gas Safe Register are not included in the course fee.
